OVERACHIEVER

In his return to the TGF page, we have Chicago rapper, Jay Wood who is offering us a look into his musical process and giving us his latest single “Overachiever.” If you’re well-rounded in the music scene in Chicago, Jay is someone who has had their name buzzing for a while. In the 2 years since last being featured Jay has done an interview with Lyrical Lemonade, illanoize Radio, countless shows under his belt, and even been a part of some big modeling gigs. Jay has described his music as more alternative melodic rap which perfectly fits because some of his biggest inspirations include Kanye West, 50 Cent, Childish Gambino, and Tyler the Creator. Then Jay described his writing process as not necessarily having a chosen topic upon writing, but figuring out what everything means as he gets deeper into the process.

HOMESICK

The Structure and subsequent inclusion of femdot. on the track is illusively entrancing, as the featured verse appears at the end of the track, where the “Senegalese” rapper reflects on those of his past - who they are now and the circumstances that shape them and the rest of us. It’s a fitting and somber finale to a song that celebrates the inseverable attachment that many have towards their respective homes. Can you really escape your past? Definitely, but you’ll surely never forget it.

HANDSOME

Chicago’s own Jay Wood returns to Lyrical Lemonade with arguably his best single yet titled “HANDSOME.” Impressively co-produced by Wood himself alongside Nashville producer Dmndstr, the song bouncily flips DeBarge’s iconic classic, “I Like It.” Jay’s flow is as polished as ever, and lyrically he once more showcases his signature storytelling ability to craft a romantic offering without scratching repetitiveness. If there’s an artist to name with undeniable upside, confidence and personality, Jay Wood certainly fits the description. Listen to “HANDSOME” below!

this time, next year

Chicago’s own Jay Wood releases a slick new track and accompanying visual titled “HONESTY.” Produced by Moses Mode, the 808’s and thumping bass creates a high-energy, synthetic atmosphere. The Remrod directed music video fantastically captures the auditory feelings of the song with aesthetic Chicago night captures. Jay Wood thematically is the protagonist, as he details a torn relationship resulting from broken promises, a lack of trust, and financial insecurities. Sonically the record opens up with Jay’s rapping abilities, followed by smooth vocal ad-libs along a sincerely heartfelt chorus. The second verse showcases Wood’s flow as the instrumental gathers in pace, before closing altogether with the fluid chorus once more. As Mode’s fitting beat rides out in conclusion, Jay Wood once more successfully creates a banger and a love-related record all in one.

On "HIGH HOPES" Wood explores his ambitions, vices, and ultimately what the cost of success is. Paired with dark and eclectic production from Namesake, the duo steps outside of their comfort zone to deliver a nostalgic yet fresh track.

SHE GOT ME.

“SHE GOT ME” is storytelling by visualization. An unexpected acoustic accompaniment tints the scene in Victorian regalia. Jay Wood’s typically synthy approach is swapped for the subtleties of strings, but the rapid snares aren’t alien and neither are the rhymes that find their pocket there. “No responsibilities, I been living reckless,” he raps. “Love don’t cost a thing but a reality check bitch,” he fronts.

QUALITY TIME

“Quality Time” is honestly a great EP that plays into the title so well. From the beginning of the EP with tracks “Shirley” setting the scenery, it keeps the same themes and subject matter throughout that really makes this EP special. Jay Wood is transparent with his thoughts and delivery discussing relationship situations and overall problems that we all can relate to. What really is interesting is the openness and the relatable subject matter that peaks behind every bar. I love that Jay Wood can be relatable but at the same time tell his truths and make songs that almost plays as a story tales.”

-Quinton Coleman, The Ghetto Flower

TRACKSTAR

“What makes Jay Wood’s EP great, in my opinion, is that there is a musical taste catered to everyone’s interest(s). Moreover, despite the project being dominated by romantic themes, Wood’s confident tone, along with the club-catered production makes the project equally as worthy to bump in the whip. My personal favorite record, “SH*T!,” supports the previous point, as Wood successfully delivers a love-related banger. “

-Brandon Washington, Lyrical Lemonade

POP SHIT / HEADHUNTER

On “Pop Shit,” Jay Wood serves up autotune braggadocio declaring himself the creme de la creme of any of his contemporaries. The songs' aggressive tone shows Wood’s urgency to jumpstart his journey to stardom while juggling the concepts of a higher being.

On "Headhunter," Jay Wood struggles to mend a broken relationship while questioning its worth. Should he take the righteous route or cut his losses to pursue his own vices?

ICE BREAKER

Jay Wood Shoots his shot on ICE BREAKER

“Produced by Moses Mode, the mellow trap instrumental is a perfect match for Wood as he glides on the beat. At a friendly two minutes and forty-nine seconds, the track is highly addictive and suitable for radio play” - Brandon Washington, Lyrical Lemonade
